Meta is facing legal threats in the European Union over its plan to use user data to train artificial intelligence models without explicit consent. Privacy watchdog group noyb (None of Your Business), founded by activist Max Schrems, is preparing lawsuits that could delay or derail Meta’s new AI initiatives. The policy, set to go into effect on May 27, would allow Meta to use personal data across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp for AI development.
This clash highlights the tension between tech innovation and data privacy. Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), users have the right to opt out of such data usage. If Meta proceeds without proper consent mechanisms, it could face massive fines and enforcement actions from EU regulators. The case may become a landmark battle in defining the ethical boundaries of AI training.
